Sometimes in a writer’s zeal to really set the scene and make sure the reader understands, they can fall victim to what’s known as ‘overwriting’. Screenwriting is about the economy of words and Jake Detharidge is here to discuss how to maximize the limited space you have on the page. He will go over how dialogue is commonly overwritten and how sometimes when you try to really set the scene, what ends up happening is you lose the reader!

Jake will teach the most effective ways to convey the vision in your head while trimming what’s unnecessary so you can have a tight script that tells a solid tale. He will also give each writer feedback on their sample so you can find your own overwriting pitfalls and learn to avoid them!

This 2-Week Clinic Will Cover:

  • What is overwriting and how to identify if you’re doing it
  • Tips on how to clean up ‘overwritten’ parts of a script
  • Overwriting in dialogue versus overwriting in prose
  • Common overwriting ‘sins’
