Pitch Tips

Quickly hook the listener so they understand why you’re invested in telling this story. Lead into the concept/logline and explain the situation/world we find ourselves in. Introduce the protagonist(s) we’ll be rooting for and the antagonist(s)/conflict holding them back. Clearly signpost the Act 1 / Act 2 turn and the drive of Act 2. Give us a taste of some fun setpieces and obstacles along the way. What are the stakes? How do they raise? Track how the characters evolve. Let’s understand the highest high and lowest low and signpost the turn into Act 3. What must the hero overcome to accomplish their main goal? What’s the end result? Will audiences care? If unsure, lean into the universal core truth(s) that would make it hard not to. If TV, follow the above but adapt for pilot and season structure - and give a taste of where you see the show going beyond Season 1. Good luck!

About Your Host

Joseph Amaral is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Cinema-Television and a Concentration in the Business of Entertainment. He got his foot in the door through internships at New Line Cinema and Principato-Young Entertainment. Joseph began his career as the assistant to Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (creators of the HAROLD & KUMAR franchise, writers/directors of AMERICAN REUNION) and worked his way up to overseeing the company’s first-look deal with Universal Pictures. During this time, he championed the R-rated comedy spec CHERRIES, which sold to Good Universe and attracted producers Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and director Kay Cannon to sign on. Renamed and released by Universal Pictures in 2018, BLOCKERS debuted at SXSW to rave reviews and went on to gross $94m worldwide. Joseph has multiple film and television projects in development and is in the process of launching his own production shingle.
