Roadmap Exclusive Interview!
Aside from a well-introduced world/hero, is there anything else you look for in the first 8-15 pages of a script?
The first thing I look for in a script is tone and creativity. How does the writer set up the world/hero? Does the writer take a cliched introduction or exposition and elevate it? Are there elements to the story or characters that are truly unique. For instance, a typical way to start a screenplay is for our hero to wake up in the morning via their alarm clock and get ready for work. A good writer will circumvent trivial moments like that and instead cut directly to character building. What can happen to him in the opening pages that define who this person is, and gives us a tone to expect from the rest of the script.
If you had to describe a writer’s “voice” in a few words, how would you describe it?
A writer’s voice is the authentic energy expressed in the words on the page.
If you could have been part of any movie or TV show that's been out in the past 2 years, what would it be?
Barry on HBO.
