Virtual Panel: Perspectives on the Industry from Female Power-Players

Roadmap is excited to announce a panel on female perspectives on the industry! This panel will include a representative, a TV director, and a casting director - all women! - and will discuss their thoughts and views on the industry, how it's changed since they first started, and where they see it heading.

As a screenwriter, delving into the combined knowledge of these three industry players will help you figure out what’s in demand, what aspects of your screenplay you’re already doing well and what to focus on next in order to give your script the very best chance of getting noticed!

About Your Host

Marilyn R. Atlas is a talent and literary manager and award-winning producer. Among her credits as a film producer are THE CHOKING GAME for Lifetime, based on the book Choke; REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES for HBO, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival; A CERTAIN DESIRE starring Sam Waterston; and ECHOES which won the Gold Award at the Texas International Film Festival. Atlas is currently developing a TV pilot based on the Gary Phillips series of novels High Hand and Shooter’s Point featuring strong-willed African-American protagonist Martha Chainey. She also has several projects in development based on strong, diverse female protagonists including LOLA GOES TO ROMA. Marilyn also co-wrote the recently released book Dating Your Character and has spoken at various Colleges and conferences including the International Women's Writing Conference in Italy.

Phaedra Harris has over thirty years’ experience in feature film and television casting. Harris has been involved in the casting of well over 50 films ranging in budgets from the two million dollar independent tele-feature BUTTER starring Ernie Hudson and Nia Long to the eighty million dollar studio blockbuster film THE FIFTH ELEMENT starring Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker. She has also worked on many top rated television series including THE JOHN LARROQUETTE SHOW, WHERE I LIVE, and DARK JUSTICE, to list a few. Phaedra has developed a strong working relationship with agents and a reputation for identifying new talent. Harris’ ability to attract talent to projects provides a solid foundation to produce cost effective independent films for distribution. Each cast has helped Harris become recognized as one of the top independent films casting director amongst her peers in the industry. These diverse and bankable casts have also earned her the title of producer and billing credits on several projects.

Mary Lou Belli is a two-time Emmy Award-winning director who has been directing television for over 20 years including NCIS: NEW ORLEANS, PITCH, MONK, DEVIOUS MAIDS, and HART OF DIXIE, as well as WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE, SISTER SISTER, GIRLFRIENDS, and THE GAME. She has done groundbreaking work in the field of web series, her first two - both award winners. She is also the Co-Chair of the Women’s Steering Committee at the DGA where she also serves on the Western Director’s Council, and the Leadership Council PAC. She is the co-author of three books: “The NEW Sitcom Career Book,” "Acting for Young Actors," and “Directors Tell the Story” which she co-wrote with fellow DGA member Bethany Rooney. Mary Lou teaches part time at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
