Let’s get real here - there are a lot of elements that go into a successful screenwriting career, but the scripts themselves are only one part of that. The other elements come down to marketing. Everything from your concept, to the logline, to the elevator pitch, to the list of companies you want to reach out to. All these elements go into a successful career, and mastering them is often the difference between building and maintaining good connections and not.

Thankfully, Roadmap has put together a special four-part series to cover all of this!

Session #1: Commercial Appeal - Crafting Marketable Concepts

What makes a marketable concept? Is it something you can identify beforehand, or does the market dictate what is and isn’t marketable? Tune in to learn all about how to craft your next concept for maximum commercial appeal!

Your Host for Session #1: Ryan Busse graduated San Diego State University before starting his career in the talent department at WME. After several years at WME, the last of which spent as the talent department coordinator, Busse left the agency to pursue his passion for the creative side of the industry and joined Allison Shearmur Productions. While at ASP, he was intimately involved in the sourcing, development, and production of the company’s film and television slate. Over his five years at the company, he was involved in such projects as SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, CHAOS WALKING, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, POWER RANGERS, NERVE, and Disney’s CINDERELLA, amongst others. In early 2018, Busse joined his long-time co-worker, Stephen Meinen, in opening the independent production company, STORY Collective.

STORY Collective has office space at Anonymous Content and is financially backed by a prominent musician. We are in development on projects with A-list actors, writers, and directors that for the sake of confidentiality cannot be stated until the projects are properly announced. STORY Collective has projects set up at many of the major studios and prominent financiers in town. We are equally focused on television and features.

Session #2: The Little Things - Logline and Comps

Now that you have a marketable concept, you need to be able to communicate that concept quickly to people. For that, you need a succinct logline and effective tonal comparisons. In this session, your host will give you actual formulas for composing loglines & choosing effective comps for your project.

Your Host for Session #2: Michael Poisson is an Emmy nominated producer and screenwriter who is currently staffed on Adult Swim's ROBOT CHICKEN. He was previously staffed on Netflix's RAISING DION and recently attached Red Hour (Ben Stiller's company) to one of his pilots. He has served as a Producer and Creative Director for Silent Machine Entertainment (Krysten Ritter's company), where he oversaw the creation, development, and pitching of various television projects including single cam/multi-cam comedies, and dramas. He recently finished shooting THE DEMONS OF DORIAN GUNN in New York for the Pop network, where he worked as co-Executive Producer on the pilot. Michael has also had a pilot in development with DarkFire Television (Ryan Reynolds’ company), as well as a graphic novel published by Fanboy Comics: www.thearcscomic.com. His writing has placed in various competitions including the Austin Film Festival and TVWriter.com. Michael has also previously served as a writer's assistant on the Fullscreen/Audience Network series CASSANDRA FRENCH'S FINISHING SCHOOL FOR BOYS.

Session #3: Stepping It Up - All Things Pitching

Congrats! You’ve got your marketable concept, succinct logline, and effective comps. Now it’s time to step it up to the pitch!

Your Host for Session #3: Prior to co-founding the management/production company Fictional Entity, Chris Deckard spent over seven years working with and representing talent at major agencies such as ICM Partners and WME. He has worked closely with traditional and new media buyers to find and develop content for domestic and international audiences. In addition to helping cast and package numerous features and series, he has evaluated thousands of scripts for actors and directors. Chris enjoys helping creators achieve the full potential of their ideas through character and story. Chris graduated from Cornell University and earned his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School.

Session #4: Next Level Marketing - Researching Target Homes

Great, you’ve got an incredible pitch! It’s time to get this project out there and find good homes for it. In this session, your host will give you a step-by-step process for identifying target homes that are potentially right for you and your project.

Your Host for Session #4: Michael Onofri has been with financier/production company LD Entertainment for three years as a Creative Executive working on such films as RISEN, MEGAN LEAVEY and FOREVER MY GIRL. LD's other credits include JACKIE, THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE, KILLER JOE, THE GREY, BIUTIFUL, FOREVER MY GIRL, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE (which just grossed over $80MM at the box office). Michael holds a B.A. in Theatre from DeSales University and a Certificate of Completion from the UCLA Professional Writing Program.
