Writing a Small Script that Makes a Big Splash: Indie Films and Why You Should Write One

Nat Topping
Story Editor
Amasia Entertainment

If you’re a feature writer, or a writer who wants to try their hand at features, you’ve probably heard that big, high concept movies are in and indies are out. You want to write BLADE RUNNER, you want to write WONDER WOMAN, you want to write movies that are big and grand. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but, if you’re brand new to screenwriting or you’ve gotten the “this just needs more development” note, then you really should take a deep breath and write an indie.

Whether you fall in love with indies or not, everyone can become a better writer by writing something small and contained. Because in an indie, you can’t hide behind a lot of flash and spectacle. All you have are your characters, dialogue, sense of pacing, and structure to set your script apart from all the rest.

So, what do you say? Do you accept the challenge?

In This 90 Minute Webinar, You Will Learn:

  • The small Indie script as a way to show readers good storytelling/screenwriting fundamentals.
  • The forms – dramas, quirky comedies, contained thrillers, grounded genre
  • The setting – world-building through specificity and finding a realm that’s unique
  • The characters – well drawn roles are how you get good talent to work for cheap
  • The structure – keeping things simple and shootable
  • The themes – universal relatability through specificity. Why tell this story?
  • What to do with the script once you have it – festivals, friends, pitching on Roadmap, or making it yourself.
  • Building from that script – taking lessons into larger projects
